After experiencing problems booting from SD cards, switching to noob (rpi- manager) helped a lot.

This program it installs a boot loader that automatically fixes some eeprom problems that may be the cause, also it is just pick a system and pick a SD card.
The program also has an eeprom recovery option itself, not tried yet.
troubleshooting
I seem to have messed up the system when copying mpeg videos to the SD card, so it is probably best to just keep the system clean and read all movies from a usb stick.
Switching the SD card would mean that we loose the root system. On the other hand we only have two usb slots left. This could probably be fixed with a use hub (not tried) but you can also just remotely login for raspbian, or use KORE on an android device as e remote control for Kodi / LibreELEC.
plugins

There should be a plugin for that, yet to be tried. Well.. tried but you can't install it from any menu.
For a next try i did this
In short :
- Install kodi v18 or higher, well that' the default version so..
- On linux download the zip file to install : visit
- get the ip address from kodi -> settings (gear) -> system info -> network
- gear -> libreelec -> services -> enable ssh
- copy the zip file to root@ip-address
- Login to root@ip-address with password 'libreelec'
Still it breaks here !!
