Cups

On linux cups (Common Unix Printing System) is the default installed system for printing, but it has some setbacks. Here are some problems described.

web page

Cups runs a web page on port 631. So if you are on a linux machine running cups try this link http://localhost:631

Brother printer

The current printer. Some details :

Brother MFC-J4620DW

Do not leave the printing on 'Letter' because you will loose borders on your prints. Also no 'Borderless A4' because that is incompatible with double sided printing.

The best settings for now :

  • Paper format A4
  • Double sided printing : long edge binding

I also put this setting to try it out

  • Advanced Two-sided Settings: Two-sided 2 (Slower & less ink)

troubleshooting

cups shows too many printers

Or related: how do i remove printers. The problem in my case is that is saw printers from deal services which i cannot reach, so they are just in the way. First.. how did they get there. Well it turns out the old machine i took home still has them in it's configuration and broadcasts information about them to my new machine which never was with deal services. The web interface just refuses to answer to delete, and the printer manager of mint has the delete button greyed out. You can however remove them by hand with the lpadmin. Look in the printer manager or cups, or better yet(because you can cut 'n paste the name there ) go to the webpage http://localhost:631/printers and find the printer you want to loose.

lpadmin
sudo lpadmin -x HP-Color-LaserJet-CM1312-MFP-2

If you delete this printer on the machine it does not originate from, it will just reappear after a few seconds. However that works both ways, because if you issue this command on the machine that broadcasts this printer , it will also broadcast the delete and your printer will be gone on all cups machine.

Print Failed

: Something went wrong when trying to print. Pleas check your printer and try again.

When using from chrome -> system dialog this message appeared without more messages. You could print with Caja (file manager) but that does not take all options from cups. For instance double sided printing is greyed out there.

The reason was an error in the print dialog, it defaults to print page 5 for some reason, and there were only 2 pages to print.

First check all setting on the print dialog itself.

The "system print dialog" which is presented in chrome does take all setting from cups default settings, so it is preferred above caja print dialog.

no option for two sided printing

When you cannot select Two-sided in the "Page Setup" tab of system print dialog, there is another setting in "Advanced" tab. Set that to "Long-Edge Binding" and hit print.
