First a none liner to check if it is running :

wget http://ipinfo.io/ip -qO -

This should not give the xs4all ip which is :

80.101.45.54

But also if you run ifconfig you should see tunnels, not just eth0 !

I don't know how the VPN shuts down, but it seems to do sometimes.
